Simone Schuiten is a professor of Philosophy and Literature at the Higher Art School of Saint Luc, Brussels. She graduated in Philosophy and Linguistics at the University of Leuven (Louvain), Faculty of Philosophy and Literature. Her current research and teaching focuses on « cross-culturalism », i.e. the study of intercultural relations and communication. As part of her research and teaching in this field, Simone Schuiten organises since 2007 yearly academic visits to China aiming at stimulating « cross-cultural » exchanges between Chinese art students and the students of the Higher Art School of Saint Luc, Brussels. She is also the organiser of conferences on this topic at universities in Beijing (CAFA), Nankin, Shanghai (Shanghai University, Fine Arts, Shanghai Normal University, Fine Arts) and a series of workshops at the Raffles Institue Shanghai and CAFA. Besides her academic activities, Simone Schuiten is the Founder and Director of the Brussels-based ODRADEK Art Centre and Residency (www.odradekresidence.be). Building further on her academic research, the objective of this art centre is to stimulate intercultural exchanges between artists (mainly artists from China) and different artistic institutions in Brussels, such as the Higher Art School of Saint Luc, the University of Louvain, the Free University of Brussels and the La Cambre Art School. Recent publications include « On the concept of ‘in-culturality’ in current Chinese Esthetics » in P. Servais (ed.), Artistics transfers from East to West in the 17th – 20th Century (Rencontres Orient Occident) (Louvain la Neuve Academia, 2014) ; « What to think of Westernization ? » (ODRADEK, 2016).
